Dicore, the third largest supplier of drilling services in the world, must increase its profitability. To do so, the executive committee is considering an expansion into the southwestern United States. The senior vice-president and general manager must create a plan that outlines whether or not Dicore should enter the southwest drilling market and, if so, if it should enter this market organically or through an acquisition.

Ideal for a managerial accounting, finance or strategy course at the undergraduate level, a full analysis of the case necessitates students complete the following: (1) an external (industry, competitive, customer) analysis; (2) an internal (corporate capabilities, statement of cash flows, ratio) analysis, including a profitability analysis of the rotary and core drilling segments of Dicore’s operations; (3) a qualitative assessment of the future expansion opportunity into the southwestern United States; (4) differential analysis comparing the organic growth option to the acquisition option; (5) formulation of an appropriate management structure for the southwestern U.S. operations; and (6) an action plan to raise the capital needed for the proposed expansion and a contingency plan.
