  • Value-Based Insurance Design at Onex

The operating executives of Health and Benefits for Onex Partners, Megan Jackson Frye and Sam Camens, faced a challenge: Healthcare costs for employees of Onex's portfolio companies were continuing to rise above the consumer price index, reflecting broader trends across employer-sponsored health insurance in the U.S. Against this backdrop, Frye and Camens considered recommending that Onex's portfolio companies adopt value-based insurance design (VBID) principles to encourage employees to take high-value medications, for example by reducing copays for drugs managing diabetes or heart conditions. The case encourages students to put themselves in the shoes of Frye and Camens, who were grappling with evidence promoted by VBID's proponents on its potential to simultaneously improve employee health and curb employer costs. The case includes content on employer-provided health insurance in the U.S., as well as the consequences of cost-sharing on consumer behavior, health, and spending.

  • What Went Wrong with Boeing's 737 Max? (B)

Following the March 10, 2019, crash of Ethiopian Airlines flight 302, en route to Nairobi, Kenya and the October 29, 2018, downing of Lion Air flight 610 as it took off from Jakarta, Indonesia, Boeing's 737 Max jet, the model flown in both instances, was grounded by the Federal Aviation Administration and regulators all over the world. During its 20-month grounding, airline customers cancelled or put in question more than 1,000 orders for the Max. • Soofa: Displaying the Right Path?

In November 2019, Sandra Richter, co-founder and CEO of Soofa, a network of advertising-supported digital bulletin boards, must decide between two different fundraising and expansion plans for her company. One plan entails raising $15 million in a Series A round and pursuing an aggressive expansion strategy, while the other represents a more modest $3 million raise to bring the company to operating profitability. Richter had developed the $15 million plan with an executive introduced to her by her venture capital board members with extensive fundraising and startup experience; however, after months of pitching to investors, the aggressive expansion plan had failed to produce a term sheet. Richter must decide whether the rapid expansion is the right course of action for the company as she begins to question whether her business could realistically meet the plan's projections even if she could secure the financing to fund it. Meanwhile, Soofa's capital was rapidly dwindling. Richter must raise another round of capital by early 2020, or will be forced to lay off the majority of her staff and close her operations. Should she continue pursuing the aggressive expansion plan, pivot to the more modest plan based on operating profitability, or attempt to pursue both plans simultaneously? And how should she navigate the growing tension on her board given the company's struggles?

  • Glenn Defense Marine Asia (A)

This case describes the growth of Glenn Defense Marine Asia (GDMA) under the leadership of Leonard Glenn Francis. GDMA provided ship husbanding and logistical support services to the United States Navy when Navy ships visited various ports in Southeast Asia. The case details the role of ship husbanding in U.S. Navy operations and the contracting process for procuring ship husbanding services. In order to help win contracts, Francis developed relationships with an extensive network of U.S. Navy officers, often by treating them to lavish meals and luxury accommodations during port visits. The (A) case concludes with Francis' arrest by U.S. authorities. The (B) case describes the aftermath of Francis' arrest, including the prosecution and sentencing of his co-conspirators and the termination of U.S. Navy contracts with GDMA. By 2017, digital, social, and mobile technologies were rapidly changing the way many of SAP's traditional customers did business over the last decade. In response to this trend, SAP had acquired companies with capabilities in e-commerce, human capital, workforce management, travel and expense management, and other areas. No longer able to rely on a single contact point through customers' IT departments, SAP's salesforce now had to target a variety of buyers including line-of-business managers and end users, who had a growing role in software purchase decisions. The case focuses on the changing role of SAP's marketing function including its ability to (a) revamp SAP's brand for the digital age to materially help sales reps when they approached buyers in the short and long term, (b) help SAP earn mindshare of prospects and customers by articulating unique points of view that informed and educated buyers who were increasingly moving online for research, insights, and thought leadership at a time when brand messages were increasingly being defined by advocacy groups and influencer communities, and (c) realistically demonstrate that recasting SAP's branding as a leading-edge technology company would pay off.
