• How to Maintain Productivity (and Employees) in the New Normal

With crowds once again packing sporting events, theatres, and restaurants, business leaders must effectively communicate to employees what their work lives will look like in the days and months ahead if social distancing doesn’t return. After two years of operating remotely, rushing decisions about the future of work to keep up with the rapid loosening of restrictions is indeed the wrong way to go. With some forethought and planning, along with early and frequent communication, companies can get the return of employees to work right, avoid costly lawsuits, and usher in a new era in employee relations. But first there are a lot of questions to answer: 1) How will you mitigate COVID-related risk? 2) How much flexibility will you offer? 3) How will you approach business travel? 4) How will you support employee mental health? 5) How will you support workforce equality? 6) How will you support your new policies? The days of rigid schedules or constant face time have passed. To keep your best people, you need to give them some ability to custom design their work lives. So, rather than dictating where they work and when they do it, seize the opportunity to build more trust by measuring your employees on their output and value. This will help keep them happy, healthy, refreshed, and productive.

The outcome of her application for the permanent CEO position had also left her with the decision of whether to stay with or leave the organization.

  • Bosai Minerals:A Journey of “Going Global” Guided by Neo-Confucianism

Located in southwest China, Bosai Minerals Group Co., Ltd. (Bosai) has been engaged mainly in the bauxite and manganese business since 1997, and by 2010, it had successfully completed acquisitions of three large overseas mining companies. By incorporating the traditionally mild and inclusive neo-Confucianism into its management philosophy, Bosai’s overseas branches had successfully integrated themselves into local communities and cultures. In March 2016, shortly before the acquisition of Guyana Manganese Inc., the board of directors was debating how to deal with employees of the acquired company. Newer directors proposed laying off inefficient local employees and granting incentives through an improved performance appraisal mechanism. This proposal was fiercely opposed by directors who had been on the board longer. Bosai’s chair and managing director had to decide how to proceed, ensuring a smooth transition and sustainable development of the subsidiary.

  • Defining Capitalism’s Character: Tom Peters versus McKinsey

AWARD WINNER - Responsible Leadership Category at European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) Case Writing Competition

In early 2021, McKinsey & Company (McKinsey) agreed to pay US$573 million to end US state-level investigations into claims that it had helped exacerbate the global opioid crisis. Tom Peters, an influential and highly respected management guru, was upset by how far his former employer had been willing to go in helping US drug maker Purdue Pharma LP increase sales of OxyContin, a narcotic-based painkiller that helped drive an opioid epidemic responsible for hundreds of thousands of tragic deaths. As far as Peters was concerned, there was no question as to whether what McKinsey did was wrong: it had ignored the “moral responsibility of business” by helping an unethical client maximize profit by aggressively promoting the wide-scale use of a highly addictive drug. In addition to asking why McKinsey was still open for business, Peters posed a previously unimaginable question: “At this moment in time, why would anyone want to go to work for McKinsey?”

  • FINRA (A): Moving Financial Regulation to the Cloud

In July 2013, the chief information officer of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) was preparing for an upcoming meeting with FINRA’s board of directors. He was building an argument for why the organization should reverse the decision he had advocated just a few months earlier and shift from a model that used on-premises data centres to one that focused on public cloud resources. Some board members were already familiar with the cloud and were using it in their own organizations, whereas others were concerned about taking their most critical data and putting it into the hands of a cloud service provider. This decision would have a profound impact on the technical direction of the regulator moving forward. Choosing to abandon their on-premises resources and shift to the cloud was a fundamental architectural decision that would significantly affect job roles and be difficult to reverse. The chief information officer had to make the case that a cloud-focused approach would meet FINRA’s current needs and serve the organization better in the long term.

  • The Art of Persuading Unreasonable Colleagues

Employee conflict is a problem that costs the global economy billions annually. As part of a six-year study on organizational effectiveness, the authors surveyed more than 750 people at 500 companies worldwide. According to their findings, the majority of today’s employees must regularly deal with what they consider unreasonable counterparts when trying to do their jobs. When faced with conflicting opinions, one in four study participants reported that people within their organizations predominantly relied on manipulation or coercion to get their way. In addition to increasing turnover, toxic work relationships reduce employee productivity and engagement by increasing employee dissatisfaction, stress, anxiety, and depression. The good news is that people often misread each other. The other good news is that when companies proactively work to resolve workplace conflict through joint problem-solving, they are around four times more likely to report that personal differences fuel learning and innovation rather than conflict. This article aims to help organizations turn employee conflicts into a positive force, which requires effectively navigating a challenging workplace terrain by creating a culture in which colleagues strive to see others with the same degree of empathy as they see themselves. According to the authors’ research, when collaboration goes beyond individual actors and pervades a company’s culture, and a joint problem-solving approach to influence is routinely employed, people learn from disagreement, make better decisions, and develop innovative solutions.
