Finally, it shows how different factors that affect the market also affect a firm's production decision.

  • Gender Diversity on Boards: Views from Norway

The issue of gender diversity on boards has received increased attention in U.S markets over the past few years. In 2018, California introduced a law which required boards of U.S-listed firms with headquarters in California to include at least one female director by the end of 2019, and at least two by the end of 2021. In December 2020, Nasdaq asked the Securities and Exchange Commission to approve new diversity rules where the goal is to have boards of firms listed on Nasdaq have at least one female director and at least one underrepresented minority or LGBTQ+ director. However, such initiatives have invited criticism from various market participants, who argue gender quotas could violate the U.S. constitution because they could force companies to turn down a male board candidate or displace a male board member based on his sex. However, countries like Norway endorsed gender quotas more than a decade ago. What can we learn from Norway's actions? This note discusses the views from four prominent male and female executives and board members from the Norway business community on the quota law a decade after its legalization. They point out both challenges faced, and benefits gained by companies from this law. Students can debate the pros and cons of quota laws by drawing from the views and experiences of these executives, and can discuss the merits of corporate diversity quotas in the U.S.

  • The Tire Maharajahs: Competing with Chinese Exporters and Tire Multinationals for Industry Leadership in India

Over a 10-year period, from 2008 to 2018, Indian tire production increased from 80 to 180 million units. Indian tire companies were thriving and investing heavily abroad. Four Indian tire companies were among the top 30 tire makers in the world. Although India was expected to experience high or hyper-growth in tire manufacturing, growth at such a fast pace brought uncertainties and risks. In addition to competition from low-cost tires imported to India, the industry was challenged by volatile pricing for the raw materials used in tire production, government initiatives that were having unintended consequences on tire sales, environmental considerations, and protectionism in India's largest export markets. What strategies did the industry need to reach profitability despite the ups and downs of the supply market, its dependence on large customers, changes in government policies, and environmental protection initiatives?

  • Customer Management Dynamics and Cohort Analysis

The digital revolution has allowed companies to amass considerable amounts of data on their customers. Using this information to generate actionable insights is fast becoming a critical skill that firms must master if they wish to effectively compete and win in today's data-driven marketplace. This note explains the value of examining customer metrics, such as retention rate, revenues, and social influence (k-factor), on an ongoing basis by conducting a cohort analysis. Such an analysis segments customers using one or more criteria, and tracks the behavior and performance of each of these segments over time. Using several instructive examples, the presentation highlights the benefits of running a cohort analysis for deriving a deep understanding of customer trends. Moreover, the examples expose the pitfalls that arise from not accounting for segment characteristics (such as when a customer joined, from what media vehicle they were acquired, how heavily they use the product, etc.) and not paying attention to the evolution of customer metrics over time. The implications of conducting a cohort analysis for firm strategy and for determining customer lifetime value (CLV) are discussed.
