• Iman Hadi and Friends of the Environment Station: Lighting up Homes in Yemen

People in Yemen faced several challenges such as lack of food, water, electricity, or proper hygiene and sanitation. Distressed by the challenges faced by the Yemenis, Iman Hadi (Hadi) set up Friends of the Environment Station (FOES) solar micro-grid station in Abs district in the Hajjah governorate in Yemen backed by the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP). In 2021, Hadi planned to scale up her solar project in other rural districts of Yemen where 47 families had no access to electricity. Going forward, she also had ambitious plans to launch a large solar power plant to provide solar electricity to nearly 3,060 households in the Al-Ghadi area in Yemen. • Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion Online

Khayal Gumaan, a professor at a reputable Canadian university, had many years of experience teaching on campus, where she prided herself in creating a safe and respectful environment by valuing diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) in her classroom. When the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 forced courses to be delivered online, she taught for the first time an online course in organizational behaviour for undergraduate students. Although still committed to promoting DEI in class, the professor found it difficult to do so in the virtual environment. Then, in the first month of her online course, a student appealed to her in a private email, asking her to intervene in an unsettling group discussion. The professor was determined to engage her students on the sensitive topic of DEI. How should she respond to the situation in her class’s online group discussion and also use it as a teaching opportunity?

  • Allbirds: Can the Sustainable Shoe Company Reinvigorate the Brand?

Allbirds, Inc., the sustainable footwear company whose sneakers were rocked by public figures from Barack Obama to Leonardo DiCaprio, was a promising startup in 2016. But by end of 2022, its stock price had plummeted to ~4% of its previous high. Born out of co-founder Tim Brown's frustration for the lack of comfortable, minimalist sneakers on the market, Allbirds aimed to address both ease of wear and sustainability as a "purpose-native company built upon a system that leverages nature in a responsible way." It was met with an almost immediate cult following in Silicon Valley, perceived as both luxurious and responsible. However, the company struggled to realize its anticipated growth, and now, CEO Joey Zwillinger must explore how to turnaround the brand.

  • FIGS: Scrubbing the Status Quo

In October 2023, FIGS had revolutionized the medical scrubs industry with its fashionable and functional designs, but the venture was at a critical juncture. The digitally native vertical brand (DNVB) had gone public in a successful IPO in 2021 and reached $500 million in revenue in 2022. Investors had dubbed FIGS the "Lululemon of healthcare apparel." However, by 2023, FIGS was facing slowing growth, significant margin pressure, and a radical share price decline, exacerbated by macroeconomic headwinds and increasing competition. In response, CEO Catherine "Trina" Spear, who was also a co-founder, was contemplating three strategic growth initiatives to bolster FIGS' competitive position: expanding international presence, targeting healthcare institutions (a move into B2B), and establishing retail stores. Each avenue of growth held potential. International was a large market opportunity, B2B could unlock a stable new revenue stream, and retail stores offered brand visibility and synergy with the online experience. Spear had to decide whether FIGS's small team should pursue one or more of these opportunities, and, if so, whether to pursue them concurrently or with a phased approach.

  • More than Optics: Olympus's Vision to Become a Leading Global MedTech Company

In August 2022, CEO Yasuo Takeuchi reflected on Olympus Corporation's recent transformation from being known as a Japanese consumer camera company to becoming a leading global medical technology (MedTech) company. Over the past dozen years, Takeuchi and prior leadership had recovered from a major scandal and reinvented Olympus's purpose, governance, portfolio, organization structure and operating model. When asked if he could have done any better, he laughed with a humble smile. "There's no 'perfect' in the world-but we are doing almost perfectly. I am not a very optimistic type of person. But we are certainly advancing [the transformation] in the right direction. I have to say, it is working very well.'" Despite being on course, the journey was ongoing. Strategically, the evolving medical technology landscape demanded new capabilities-notably building an integrated digital solutions ecosystem. Organizationally, Takeuchi was at the helm of a matrix organization in which product divisions did not necessarily have full authority for all their activities; corporate functions were learning how to establish their global roles; and regional companies still drove local sales. And personnel issues remained a concern. Senior executive positions were staffed with "two in a box"-one Japanese and one non-Japanese manager-while Japanese employees were adapting to a job-based rather than a seniority system and the widespread use of the English language in meetings. How should Olympus navigate these challenges to deliver on its aspiration to be a leading global MedTech player?

  • HPCL: Retail Network Expansion for Navigating Energy Transition

The chief general manager (Retail) at Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) was reviewing the sites that had been shortlisted for network expansion. The company needed to select three sites out of six on the short list where it could expand its retail operations. Traditionally, the sales potential for HPCL's main products-motor spirit and high-speed diesel-was an overarching factor for site selection. However, the company had to also now take into account the strategic requirement to expand the current retail fuel network while considering the energy transition as well as other growth avenues. As such, the network expansion strategy and site selection process had to be in alignment with the aspirational targets set by the company. For selecting the most suitable sites, a set of criteria was identified that aligned with HPCL's targets. However, no single shortlisted site provided the maximum benefit across all criteria, so selecting the right sites for expansion would be a difficult task.

  • Flakk Group Case A. Hexagon Purus: Fuelling the future

In May 2018 the Norwegian Government introduced new requirements for emissions-free entry into the Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord fjords, a UNESCO World Heritage site, making them the world's first zero-emission zones at sea. For Knut Flakk, CEO and owner of Norway's Flakk Group, it was a watershed moment. Norway and sustainability had a complicated relationship. On the one hand, the country was a pioneer in the use of renewable energy. Almost 90% of the power network ran entirely on clean hydroelectricity and Norwegian policymakers had begun to support electric vehicles as early as 1990. As a result, Norway boasted the highest per capita share of EVs in the world. On the other hand, Norway's huge oil and gas reserves had made the country extremely wealthy. And while many people were now focused on reducing their carbon footprint and being energy-efficient, Knut had a bigger picture in mind, saying "I'm more interested in being climate-positive, with renewable sources. Hydrogen is a zero-emission energy carrier that can be used for boats, trains and planes."

  • The Evolving Semiconductor Industry: Post-COVID Challenges for Automakers

The case describes the disruption caused by the shortage of chips and sensors in the automobile sector. Although semiconductors used in the automobile sector are essentially low value and cost only a few dollars, they are technologically intensive in terms of both design and manufacturing. Moreover, only a few players in the manufacturing sector have the capability to produce chips, creating an asymmetry in the power equation. Interestingly, the semiconductor value chain is adapting to new geopolitical tensions, and the chipmaking landscape may undergo a significant change in the next 10-15 years. In this context, the case discusses the structure of the semiconductor industry as a whole and its characterization within the automobile sector. It also describes the current sourcing model of semiconductors used by automakers. The main objective is to help students better understand the complex and evolving supply chain structure and its implications for automobile companies worldwide. The case concludes with specific questions about how automakers should restructure their semiconductor supply chains and address future disruptions.
