• Managing Workplace Diversity: Jacob (A)

This series of eight short two-part cases ("caselets") is written to highlight some of the most challenging and potentially destabilising moments in everyday work life in the Asian context. With globalisation, many Asian organisations are becoming increasingly diverse. Managers and employees often have to deal with tensions arising from workplace diversity. At some point in most people's career, they will inevitably encounter these difficult situations either as seen by the protagonists of the cases or as the bosses who have to manage the protagonist; or might be friends, colleagues or family members of the protagonist. It is hence important that these situations can be managed from different perspectives.

  • Coca-Cola's 'eKOCool' Solar Cooler: Innovation to Empower Women Retailers in Rural India

In 2011, Coca-Cola India recognised the opportunity to access the rural and remote markets of India in a more effective manner by launching the 'eKOCool', a solar power operated cooler. This innovation had the potential to expand the hitherto underserved and hard to penetrate Indian rural market, and even bring home the first time consumers who had never tasted the company's beverages. It also facilitated an integration of the company's business development goals with its social responsibility initiatives - in particular, contributing towards the global 5by20 initiative of enabling economic empowerment of five million women entrepreneurs by 2020. To make this innovative product affordable, the technical team worked through the supply chain and brought down the costs to US$779, more than a third of the original cost. However, the company's top management acknowledged that for long-term sustainable impact and the scalability of the innovation, it was imperative that the cost be brought down further. How could this best be done, and how could the golden triangle of business, government and civil society come together to develop similar initiatives that would develop value for communities?

  • Erie Thames Powerlines: The Hybrid Truck Decision

Erie Thames Powerlines, an electricity distributor in Southwestern Ontario, needed to determine the suitability of the company acquiring a hybrid truck as opposed to a conventional diesel utility truck. As of early July 2016, the truck suppliers (for both hybrid and diesel trucks) and the internal accounting department had provided substantial information with which to conduct a thorough analysis. The company also wanted to include some qualitative aspects, such as the reduction of noise pollution and the positive contributions of hybrid trucks both to the company’s image and to its promotion of energy efficiency. The firm needed to build an appropriate business analysis that included both qualitative and quantitative elements to support a recommendation to the utility company’s board of directors in August 2016.

  • MacEwan Residence Services - A Risky Accommodation?

In November 2014, the Residence Services department at MacEwan University in Alberta, Canada, needed to replace a residence assistant who was exiting midway through the academic year. The new hire would have one semester of work for the current academic year and, with good performance, was expected to return for two semesters of work in the following academic year. One of the qualified applicants had a distinguishable disability: she used a wheelchair. On the one hand, it would be easier for Residence Services to not hire her because of the various potential risks, concerns, or expected difficulties that could arise with her employment. The primary concern was her ability to respond effectively to emergency situations. A secondary concern was the impact on operational efficiency and the need to adapt work and staff routines to accommodate the use of a wheelchair. On the other hand, it was not legal to discriminate against the candidate for employment, and Residence Services valued inclusive hiring practices. The decision to hire or not hire this candidate needed to be made very soon.

  • Data Analytics at DBS Group Audit: The Future of Auditing is Auditing the Future

The case is set in January 2014 and reveals the data analytics initiatives at DBS Group Audit. Group Audit was used to assess the riskiness of the bank's branches based on seven attributes derived from the auditors' collective wisdom. The results could sometimes be misleading and inaccurate. To revamp this process, a machine-learning predictive modelling technique was introduced, and successfully correlated more than 130 risk-related attributes. In February 2014, DBS Group Audit and A*STAR's Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) reached an agreement to set up a joint lab, leveraging the research institute's capabilities in developing innovative products and services. The outputs of data analytics are displayed in three forms. First, the heat map reveals the risk level of all branches in Singapore from a birds-eye perspective. Second, complaint analysis helps to identify customer needs more accurately, reducing the level of complaint. Third, cash discrepancy and headcount issues are reflected on the outcome page as a sudden jump in the graph. With these techniques, the auditors were expected to save man-hours and process the auditing work more effectively and efficiently by being responsive to changing risk profiles on a timely basis. The application of data analytics on risk profiling practices at DBS Group Audit is an anchor point for the bank's vision of being predictive in risks. The bank is motivated to bring this data analytics initiative to other areas as well.

  • Sathavahana: Strategies for Financial Turnaround

The managing director of Sathavahana Ispat Limited (SIL) was relieved when his company's expanded manufacturing facilities commenced operations on April 1, 2015, after a delay of more than a year. Though he had a reason to rejoice, the managing director also had concerns about SIL's rising borrowing costs and dwindling liquidity. Accordingly, he approached the Indian Women's Bank to replace the company's high-cost debt to the extent of ₹3 billion and to raise a corporate loan of ₹1 billion. Would the proposal be sanctioned? Or would it be rejected due to SIL's weak financials, subdued market conditions and the ongoing global economic slowdown?

  • Canara Bank Turnaround

Canara Bank has been one of the top five public sector banks in India since its founding in 1906. After lagging behind its competitors for some years, it has finally started to recover from non-performing assets and low profitability. Its new chief executive officer has brought vision, strategic direction, and motivation to achieve a remarkable turnaround in 2013/14, but now he faces several key questions. Should the bank launch an ambitious expansion of its branches, online services, information technology, and human resources, based solely on the recent encouraging results? Is the management committee's optimism justified, given that several new initiatives are still at various stages of implementation? Will this growth overstretch Canara Bank's already constrained resources? In order to regain its position and improve reach and profitability in a highly competitive market, an expansion program has to be launched or an opportunity will be missed.
