• United States Department of Education: Launching the College Scorecard, a Digital Service

The goal of the case is to understand how to design, build, and engage with digital technologies as they relate to civic participation, equity, governance, and accountability. Delivering critical services to the public requires building technology that works for people. In environments like the public sector, this can be a challenge, but it is possible and necessary. Students will learn how product managers set strategy, define products, advocate for the user, manage stakeholders, and understand market or policy factors in order to ship technology services and products that benefit people. In 2015, the Obama Administration asked a cross-governmental team to reimagine the College Scorecard, a website to assist high school students with their college decisions. This team consisted of the United States Digital Service (which fell under the Executive Office of the President), 18F (which fell under the General Services Administration), and the Department of Education. The team, whose members had diverse skillsets and backgrounds, understood the problem by conducting a thorough discovery sprint. This helped them understand users, particularly high school students from different backgrounds, parents, guidance counselors, and other stakeholder groups. The team then continuously engaged users as they built the product, working across three different government entities to get a digital product launched. The team members and technology leaders included in this case: Holly Allen, Sarah Allen, Shawn Allen, Lisa Gelobter, Michelle Hertzfeld, Jessica Teal, Sabrina Williams, David Nesting.

MGM Resorts International (MGM), a global hospitality and entertainment company operating in various locations, including Las Vegas, faced a choice between profitability and responsibility. The company needed to attract as many customers to its casinos as possible to increase its profits from gambling. However, MGM had also been advancing an image of an ethical corporation by promoting its responsible gambling program, which was meant to discourage overspending on gaming activities. • Pause and Refresh: Rethinking Coca-Cola's Response to the Georgia Voting Reform Law

This exercise is designed to give students an opportunity to develop a communications plan and press statement for The Coca-Cola Company (Coke) as it attempts to navigate the 2021 Georgia voting law controversy. Specifically, it asks students to assume the role of chief marketing and communications officer (CMCO) at Coke and recommend a communications plan, including a press statement, to fulfill their role as CMCO while living up to the brand's purpose and values statements. This exercise helps students understand: (1) the challenge associated with making corporate communications decisions in a way that aligns with brand purpose and helps drive growth, and (2) the difficulty of navigating hot-button issues. This exercise can be used as a stand-alone activity or as the second part in a two-part series. If used as the second part of the series on aligning brand activism, brand purpose, and growth, the case "Coca-Cola Puts Its Brand Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Aligning Activism with Brand Purpose" (UVA-M-1019)[1] enables students to take different stakeholder perspectives and consider potential decisions. This exercise then provides an opportunity for students to activate the strategic decision made in the case as they are asked to develop an action plan and press statement for Coke. This exercise is well suited for undergraduate, MBA, MBA for executives (EMBA), and Executive Education programs. For undergraduate students, it can be taught in a brand management, capstone marketing strategy, management communications, or a management strategy course to help students learn how challenging it is to align and implement activism and brand purpose. For MBA/EMBA students, it can be used in a first-year core marketing course or in a leadership communication, strategy, or brand management elective.

  • Andrew Yang: A New Way Marketing Campaign

This field-based case follows Andrew Yang, who went from an unknown to a major competitor in the 2020 Democratic Party presidential race. Yang's initial rise to fame was largely owed to a group of young people who called themselves the Yang Gang. They made memes, GIFs, and music videos, had lengthy discussions about Yang's campaign platform on Reddit, showed up at rallies, and served as small donors. This success, however, was a double-edged sword. While the Yang Gang brought the candidate name recognition, the marketing strategy that worked for this group of superfans did not work for the more conventional voter base. The case asks students to evaluate the role of digital in Yang's brand strategy and establish strategic priorities for maximizing his chances of securing the nomination. Students must consider the importance of different voter segments to Yang's campaign and consider how effectively each media channel (e.g., television, YouTube, email) speaks to each of the voter segments. This case has been successfully taught in a second-year MBA elective on digital marketing. It was used at the end of the module about integrating-and going beyond-digital channels to grow a brand. The material encourages exploration of managing digital and traditional marketing tools among stakeholders with different objectives. This case can also be used to teach students about market segmentation, brand essence (using brand pyramids as a tool), and the concept of "crossing the chasm." As such, it could also be used in a broader introductory marketing course.

  • Yes Bank: AI or Human Connection for Talent Management?

The program head for retail talent acquisition at Yes Bank Limited needed to improve the talent acquisition process to fill vacant positions for relationship managers-a critical position within the business unit. Competition for talent was severe, with multiple positions at competing organizations open to suitable candidates, and screening the necessary number of candidates to ensure recruitment success was time-consuming and frustrating for everyone involved. One of the bank's business leaders, particularly frustrated with the hiring process and the lack of consistency with candidate selection, was pressing for an urgent solution. One option was to use an artificial intelligence (AI) platform, which centralized the candidate applications and improved the screening process by using machine learning to review videotaped candidate interviews. AI ranked the candidates, providing access to a larger talent pool and a quicker path to acquiring the needed talent. The process would resolve the bottlenecks that job aspirants typically faced in the traditional interview process, but would the tool dehumanize the entire process and undermine the interactions that ultimately led to better conversions and future integration with the brand and values of Yes Bank?

  • Microsoft Surface Hub 2S: The Higher-Education Market Opportunity

The Surface Hub 2S, a video-based collaboration device, had been initially designed for the corporate market. In late 2020, Jon Worsley, senior director of hardware program management at Microsoft, and Frank Buchholz, senior product marketing manager for Surface devices, were exploring a new opportunity in the higher-education market. In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Zoom had established itself as the go-to software platform for livestreaming and webinars for higher education. Worsley and Buchholz believed that the Surface Hub, with its large display and Microsoft Teams collaboration software, could offer a more powerful integrated solution for teaching and learning for universities and colleges.

To pursue the higher-education market opportunity, Microsoft would need to pivot the positioning and messaging, as well as the design of the Surface Hub 2S. This pivot involved two sets of decisions: one in marketing communications and the other in product design. In the short term, Microsoft's marketing team, led by Buchholz, would need to redesign the value proposition, positioning, and messaging for the Surface Hub to appeal to educators. In the longer term, Worsley's engineering team would need to redesign the product features and the product architecture of the Surface Hub 2S to better address the needs of students and instructors. In entering the higher-education opportunity, Microsoft had to be careful not to create a product or deliver a message that would diminish its offering for the core corporate market.

  • The 2012 Spanish Labor Reform: Lifting all Boats, or Leveling Down?

Since 1978, Spain had struggled to control unemployment. The country's labor law was protective of employees hired long-term and companies used temporary contracts as buffers. In 2012, amid economic recession and a 23.6% unemployment rate, a center-right government of Mariano Rajoy passed a reform to liberalize the labor market. The authors of the labor reform argued that it helped to close the current account deficit and recover from the recession. Critics of the reform instead argued that it increased job precariousness and impoverished employees. Others believed that even more flexibility was necessary. In January 2021, Spain was governed by a coalition between the socialists and the extreme left-wing electoral alliance Unidas Podemos, led by the populist left wing party Podemos. Both the Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, also the socialist party leader, and Pablo Iglesias Turrión, Second Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Social Rights and the head of Podemos, had promised to repeal the labor law in the electoral campaign of 2019. But not all ministers in the cabinet shared the same view. In addition, the government was applying for funding from the EU to help the Spanish economy to recover from the recession that followed the COVID-19 pandemic. But to unlock the €140 billion in grants and loans from the EU COVID-19 fund, Sanchez had to present a convincing plan of structural reforms to boost the economy and address its structural problems. Would the EU Commission approve Spain's recovery plan if the 2012 reform were to be repealed? What should Sánchez's government do?
