• Israel-An Energy Leviathan?

In the last decade, Noble Energy and the Delek Group have discovered almost 40 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, offshore of Israel. For Israel, this has been an extraordinary turnaround, from energy dependence on Arab producers to energy independence and exporter. For Prime Minister Netanyahu, this abundance poses a huge foreign-policy opportunity to lock in national relationships. For Noble, it poses significance operational challenges, funding issues, and long-term political risk.

  • Blue Apron: Turning Around the Struggling Meal Kit Market Leader

In 2016, Blue Apron was the leading meal kit delivery business in the United States. The initial registration form it filed in advance of its initial public offering (IPO) showed a successful business in a rapidly growing industry. Meal kit sales had grown to $5 billion in 2017 and were expected to grow at a 20% annual rate in the years to come and Blue Apron held a commanding 53% market share. But Blue Apron's customer metrics indicated long-term trouble. Focused on sales growth, the company was acquiring more customers but at a higher cost. Additionally, the new customers generated less revenue on average than customers acquired earlier in Blue Apron's history. This case focuses on measuring customer lifetime value (CLV) and using it to make customer management decisions. Students will follow new Blue Apron CEO Brad Dickerson as he tries to determine how to manage customer relationships to improve profitability. The case also presents customer retention curves and a segment-based approach to calculating customer value. Students can obtain the curves by using the estimates and financial data provided in the spreadsheets accompanying the case.

  • MISHA: Modernizing the World of Shisha

The case opens in 2017 with two of the five co-founders of MISHA telling the company's CEO Michal Portz that they believe it is time for the global venture to shut down its operations and cease investments. Portz and another co-founder believe MISHA can still work. The case describes the origins of the ready-to-use capsule solution for shisha smokers and the evolution of MISHA from idea to product design, manufacturing, marketing, and distribution. Consequent mishaps slow down the performance of MISHA, and after five years of the product being in the market and four financing rounds, numbers are far behind what they were in the business plan. The case explores the pivots the company goes through. The central dilemma is this: should the cofounders pull the plug on the company or invest more time and money to try to turn it around? When and according to which criteria should Portz make such a decision?

  • Polaris Battery Labs: Startup Risk Management

Polaris Battery Labs was an Oregon-based startup that provided innovation services to companies in the lithium ion battery industry. Its operating philosophy and expertise in this fast-growing industry enabled it to provide great value to its clients, but as a startup that was seeking growth the company was subject to multiple risks. For Polaris, taking clients, developing new manufacturing capabilities to meet unproven battery technologies, and even extending credit to its clients posed real risk. Many of its clients were startups themselves and had a significant probability of failure. Others were established firms testing new and unproven battery technologies, many of which were unlikely to gain traction in the market. The case examines how a technology-driven firm managed the risk of working with startups, claiming appropriate intellectual property, and developing a sustainable portfolio of clients.

  • Garanti Payment Systems: Digital Transformation Strategy (A)

Işıl Akdemir Evlioğlu, executive vice president of marketing at Garanti Payment Systems (GPS), a subsidiary of Garanti Bank, is grappling with three questions. First, should GPS create its own mobile app for credit card customers or leverage the bank's already successful mobile banking app? Second, if a separate app was developed, then who should manage it? GPS managed the bank's credit card business and was as a separate entity, but the bank's digital assets were managed exclusively by the bank. Third, if a separate app was not developed, then would the required breadth and depth of functionality for the credit card customers be delivered? If a separate app was not developed, then would GPS be able to design one when they had never done so before? The credit card business included a popular loyalty program and GPS leadership was very focused on customer engagement and experience for program enrollees, but how best to do that was a critical question.

  • Garanti Payment Systems: Digital Transformation Strategy (B)

The case opens with three questions that Işıl Akdemir Evlioğlu, the executive vice president of marketing at Garanti Payment Systems (GPS), a subsidiary of Garanti Bank, is grappling with in January 2015. First, should GPS, create its own mobile app instead of capitalizing on the Bank's successful banking mobile app? Second, if a separate app was developed, then who should manage it? GPS managed the Bank's credit card business and was as a separate entity. But, the Bank's digital assets were managed exclusively by the Bank. Third, if a separate app was not developed, then how did the breadth and depth of functionality for the credit card customers need to be resolved? GPS employed nontraditional marketing techniques for managing the credit card business of the Bank. It was more of a loyalty program than a pure credit card business and had high focus on customer engagement and experience. GPS generated revenues from its customers (consumers and merchants) by managing installments and other features of credit cards. However, in 2013 and 2014, the banking watchdog of Turkey instituted a series of regulations on credit card providers to curb the prevailing consumer indebtedness in the country. As was the case for all Turkish retail banks and credit card businesses, GPS's profitability was hit severely. Evlioğlu immediately shifted her focus to the idea of transferring GPS's campaign management to a mobile app and driving down costs. But, how best to do that was a critical question.

  • Food Marketing

Literature in food marketing provides many examples of implicit associations and tensions of which marketers should be aware. For example, a brand that positions its product as healthy and tasty may struggle to gain traction in the market because consumers tend to associate good-tasting food with low health value, and therefore assume healthy food tastes bad. Often, consumers make purchases based on heuristics and perceptions. This note provides insights on some of the main tension in the literature. The note can be used alone, but fits nicely with the cases "Just: Positioned to Target Mainstream Tastes?" (A) and (B) (UVA-M-0956 and UVA-M-0957).

  • Fairdeal Appliances: Managing the Dealer Network for Optimal Sales

In January 2018, the regional manager of Fairdeal Appliances (Fairdeal) was deliberating the merits of continuing with a selective distribution strategy in Denpasar, Bali. Abdul Electronics, Denpasar’s biggest retail outlet for Fairdeal appliances, had just taken on a dealership for Technica, which was a strong competitor to Fairdeal. However, if Fairdeal responded by approaching additional retail outlets to carry its appliances, it risked an increase in intra-channel competition, which could result in less dealer motivation to sell Fairdeal appliances and an overall reduction in Fairdeal sales in Denpasar. The regional manager also knew that if Fairdeal did not increase its presence through additional retail outlets, it would likely continue to lose sales from Abdul Electronics, but would have no possibility of making up the shortfall. In future, other retailers who sold Fairdeal appliances might also become Technica dealers. Had Fairdeal’s selective distribution strategy run its course? Should Fairdeal open up the market and pursue an intensive distribution strategy? The entire market was waiting for a response from Fairdeal.

On December 5, 2017, Tony Mun-Gavin, the business unit head for Personal Care at Unilever South Africa, was leading an immersion experience for new team members in the Soweto township of Johannesburg. The immersion was part of an effort to continuously embed a culture of inclusive growth with new employees, and it aligned with the corporate social responsibility commitment of the parent company, Unilever Pty. Ltd. Mun-Gavin faced a conflict in marketing the company’s personal care brand, Lux, which had always been associated with glamorous female celebrities but that was no longer in line with the company’s commitments to sustainability, inclusive growth, and women’s empowerment. His team had to work to re-position the brand to celebrate the diverse roles of women in the 21st century. Would the re-positioning work, and would it be consistent with the company’s goals of embedding a culture of inclusive growth and ensuring sustainability across the organization?

  • The National University Hospital: Overcrowding in the Emergency Department

In June 2009, the new chief executive officer at the National University Hospital in Singapore had serious concerns about the hospital’s prolonged emergency department boarding time—the time between an emergency doctor’s decision to admit a patient and the patient’s occupation of a hospital bed. He knew that a prolonged boarding time was one of the leading factors contributing to emergency department overcrowding, which in turn hindered the delivery of high-quality medical care and compromised patient outcomes. The chief executive officer needed to decide what strategy the National University Hospital should adopt to reduce the prolonged emergency department boarding time and how the hospital should execute such a strategy.
