iThrive Games: Championing Responsible Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship in Games
This case aims to study the growth, evolution, and social innovation of iThrive Games, a socially minded initiative that aims to create meaningful opportunities using technology for teens to enhance the knowledge, mindsets, and skills they need to thrive through development and across the continuum of mental disorder to wellness. iThrive's focus has been on creating "meaningful games"-that is, games that promote health and well-being of teen players. Founded in 2014 by Dorothy Batten, President of DN Batten Foundation, the organization's mission was to collaborate with game developers, partner with teens across the game development cycle (ideation to testing), and provide resources to foster teen thriving through gameplay. To do so, the organization took a unique social entrepreneurial approach. Drawing on a positive psychology framework and building the brand among key stakeholders including game developers, researchers, funders, youth, educators, and parents, the organization orchestrated a community dedicated to advancing the meaningful games field, and in doing so, have widespread impact. -
The University of Virginia Pay-for-Success Lab: Jump-Starting University-Based Pay-for-Success Research Labs
This case study gives an overview of the creation of the Pay-for-Success (PFS) Lab at the University of Virginia (UVA). It highlights the key opportunities and challenges of launching such research labs and concludes with several key decision questions that should be considered. -
Diogenes-FG: Heralding Responsible Innovation in Fiduciary Services for Retirement and Nonprofit Trustees
Diogenes pioneered the use of technology to support trustees and boards in their role as fiduciaries of employee retirement funds. Typically, a multinational corporation with operations in 30-40 countries may have hundreds of pension plans, each with their own characteristics. Common among all of them is the opportunity to demonstrate conformance with globally recognized fiduciary best practices. The Diogenes Fiduciary Compliance System gathers and curates all relative documents and compares that information with the 21 practices and the 82 criteria of the ISO 9000 based Fi360 Prudent Practices. Using sophisticated statistical techniques including Bayesian Inference, the software continuously evaluates conformance to the Prudent Practices and reports on areas which need to be addressed. Reporting by exception, the user starts with a global view and can drill down by region, country, company, and plan to review the issues. A continuous audit log provides management with the information to support their role as fiduciaries by continuously monitoring their investments as required by the US Supreme Court's guidelines in the 2015 Tibble v. Edison International case. Board members can rest easily knowing that management meets the highest level of quality in support of their employees and shareholders. -
The DPC Concentric Health Relationship Platform: Catalyzing Social Entrepreneurship in Health Care Services
The existing U.S. health care system is complex. Most individuals have health insurance coverage provided by various third-party payers. The payers include employers, health insurance carriers, and government-sponsored programs, such as nationally administered Medicare and Medicaid, which is offered by all 50 states with some support from the federal government. Each payer's program varies in terms of the health services covered as well as the amount of the cost of care allocated back to the individual in the form of visit copayments, individual deductibles, and other cost-sharing strategies. These offerings are administered by various health plans and many payers offer multiple administrative alternatives. For example, Medicare is administered nationally, but there are multiple "Medicare Advantage" alternatives available as well as the basic program offering. In addition, there are numerous Medicare supplemental plans available to increase the benefits for the individual recipient. Founded in 2014, DPC Concentric Health System's (DPC Concentric's) mission is to identify the people, strategies, and capital needed to help the U.S. health care system heal itself. Based on continuous improvement design driven by continuous learning, DPC Concentric's human capital/technology initiatives deploy the power of entrepreneurial physicians in a free market. This social entrepreneurial approach responds distinctly to the incumbent relationship infrastructure of "fee-for-service" third-party reimbursement at the provider and self-funded payer levels. The DPC Concentric continuous-improvement infrastructure becomes practical, achievable, and self-perpetuating as incumbent leadership commits to catalyzing outcome-based health care solutions. It is distinctly relationship based, providing incumbent advisers ample opportunity to lead as continuous-improvement consultants to physicians and employers. -
Focused Ultrasound Foundation: Paving the Way for Responsible Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship in Health Care Services
Focused ultrasound (FUS) technology is an early stage, noninvasive therapeutic technology with the potential to transform the treatment of many medical disorders by using ultrasonic energy to target tissue deep in the body without incisions or radiation. The technology had the potential to improve outcomes and decrease costs by serving as an alternative or complement to surgery, radiation therapy, drug delivery, and immunotherapy.
