  • Bringing God into the Business: The Impact on Human Resource Management Practices and Employee Turnover at L&R Pallet

Despite L&R Pallet having become the largest pallet manufacturer in the Rocky Mountain region, it was facing dire staffing and financial difficulties in 2013. James Ruder, the 44-year-old president of L&R Pallet, was convinced it was just a matter of time before the company closed its doors. However, after taking a mission trip to Peru and hearing God's message to "love on" his employees, Ruder decided to hire seven refugees from Burma in a desperate attempt to find an alternative source of labor. Within a week, the Burmese employees were outperforming his other workers. Thinking he had found the solution to his employee problems, Ruder hired an additional 18 refugees. Within several weeks, though, he found that he had a real mess on his hands with the refugees getting injured, some of his Mexican workers calling him a "Mexican hater," and the rest of his staff resenting the attention he was showering on the refugees. Ruder needed to determine how to handle the growing tension within his company's culture as well as find the necessary human capital to run his business.

  • Up, Up, and Away! Event Planning and Production in Las Vegas

Event producer Dan Nelson is faced with a crisis involving a punctured sprinkler water line and a 1.5-ton forklift stuck in the resulting mud during set up for an event for 350 attendees taking place that evening. The event is to be held outdoors on the driving range of a Las Vegas resort's golf course on the famous Las Vegas Strip. Dealing with the resort's catering staff and various contractors, Nelson must now create alternatives on-the-fly for dealing with the crisis during the implementation phase of this event, make a quick decision, and implement an alternative under time pressure. The case provides opportunities for: (1) assessing potential risk and crisis management issues pertaining to a particular event and compiling suggestions for closing gaps; (2) using various decision tools (GANTT chart, project management software, EMBOK model) to aid in crisis management, and ultimately, decision making; (3) identifying event stakeholders and managing the relationship between the stakeholders and the event producer; and (4) reflecting on the crisis that happened and learning from it so as to avoid or prepare for it in the future.

  • The Road to Tortuguero

The case presents a decision facing a tour guide organization in Tortuguero, Costa Rica regarding environmental sustainability and social equity. Tortuguero was situated on a spit of land, isolated from the rest of the country due to the ocean, rivers, and a protected national park. It was inaccessible by road. Tortuguero was home to the most prolific nesting beach for giant sea turtles in the Atlantic. Turtle-based tourism was the basis of the tiny village's economy. Daryl Loth, President of the Tortuguero Tour Guide Association (TGA), had to oversee a meeting of the TGA, a self-organized group of local tour guides in the village. The TGA had collected a fee of about 40 US cents from each tourist taking a turtle tour and was going to choose one of three proposals for spending its $30K of revenues from the past two years. Community members were permitted to comment at TGA meetings, and some had argued that spending money on a road to Tortuguero would launch an increase in tourists; accessibility to health care, higher education, and lower priced goods and services; and hence, an increase in prosperity and their constitutional right to social equity. Some TGA members believed that an increase in tourists would lead to more business for them and the village businesses, plus greater awareness for the plight of the endangered green sea turtles. Others believed the lack of convenient access to the village was one reason they had been able to protect the turtles and attract new and repeat tourists. This case stimulates discussion of the following questions: What effects would the decision have on the community, the turtles, and the sustainability of ecotourism in Tortuguero in the short and longer term? Should environmental sustainability take precedence over social equity and ready access to medical care, university education, and lower prices for staple goods? What is the ethical choice?
