• The Era of Corporate Citizenship: Perodua's Advertising with a Social Dimension

As a home-grown compact car maker in Malaysia, Perodua has integrated social messages into its corporate advertisements since 1999, seeking to enlighten the local audience about various social issues and values. With the growing concern of corporate social responsibility ("CSR") globally, company advertising with a social dimension ("CASD") seemed to be an effective way for Perodua to portray its good corporate citizen image. However, the impact of the ads on direct and tangible returns in the form of sales was hard to determine. Since 2005, trade liberalization in South-East Asia resulted in reduced government protection for Malaysia's indigenous automotive industry and there was more emphasis on corporate differentiation strategies. In response to the escalating competitiveness and the increasing interest in CSR, Perodua's corporate leaders and its management had to rethink how corporate advertisements emphasizing social aspects could sustain the company's profitability and reputation in the long run. Besides, controversies easily arose when social issues such as race-related topics were not handled with sensitivity, given the diverse cultural context of Malaysia. Set in the context of an industry characterized by intensifying competitiveness and in a multicultural environment in which the social impact of advertising is emphasized, Perodua's strategy of CASD becomes very interesting.

  • North Goes East

In August 2006, Magnus Lofgren and Robert Provine, managing directors and co-founders of the "North Real Estate Opportunities Fund," need to decide which real estate investment the Fund should pursue as its first project. The Fund's target region, Central and Eastern Europe, was changing rapidly and returns in some of the more developed regions started to resemble those generated in Western Europe. Yet, the two partners had managed to identify several projects in different countries that promised to generate the Fund's targeted Internal Rates of Return at or above 20% annually. They now had to decide which opportunity was the best match to the Fund's investment profile and showed the highest economic promise.

  • SnackChips in China

This case is intended to work well as an exam or a capstone for a course on decision analysis, simulation, real options, and game theory. It explores a conventional snack-chip marketer's strategy in China for promoting and advertising a recently acquired healthy snack-chip brand in mid-2002. The marketer has some key decisions to make, now and in the future, about a range of marketing expenditures in the context of an exciting emerging market and in the face of a formidable competitive threat from its chief rival. The case allows students to consider how two parties' decisions about marketing expenditures and market entry interact and to extend the notion of a single party's downstream decision (or real option) to multiple parties' "interactive" real options. The case's competitive situation can be modeled as a dynamic game of imperfect information, or a multiperiod decision situation with continuous uncertainties and a strategic interaction embedded downstream. Monte Carlo simulation of both parties' payoffs under equilibrium play in the downstream subgame yields a subgame perfect Nash equilibrium, which entails "interactive" threshold policies for both parties.

  • Leveraged Loans 2007

The leveraged loan market was in a crisis during the summer of 2007, following many years of low realized volatility (less than 4% per annum), an index of leveraged loans had fallen over 5% in the month of July. A sudden drop in capital market prices for an asset class can be caused by news affecting fundamental values; or by a widespread liquidity shock. The implication of a shock to fundamental value is that the price drop is permanent, whereas if the underlying cause of the price drop is caused by a liquidity event, the situation may represent a profitable investment opportunity. Investors must assess the likely cause of the recent price drops in the leveraged loan market and determine an appropriate investment strategy.

  • Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston and Dr. Bradford J. Shingleton (2004)

Dr. Bradford Shingleton has developed some of the highest quality eye surgery techniques in the industry. He involves his nurses and technicians in creating a surgical service that is constantly improving. The case has many details about how Dr. Shingleton works with his staff and patients, and how the provider team focuses on patient care. A key measure of productivity for the surgery center is the time required in the operating room. Shingleton's numbers are impressive as they decrease each year. The business context relates to the particular patients, mostly require cataract or glaucoma surgery and the payer is Medicare/Medicaid, which regulates the price. Yearly decreasing prices make it more difficult for doctors to earn a good income unless they improve their productivity. Other surgeons in the practice do not copy Dr. Shingleton's practices nor use his trained surgical team. The dilemma relates to why his methods do not spread to other doctors and other clinics.

  • Shareholder Activists at Friendly Ice Cream (A)

Two activist investors, one a founder and one a hedge fund manager, seek to improve board oversight at a chain restaurant company. Prestley Blake founded Friendly Ice Cream in 1935 with his brother, and the two created a chain of full-service restaurants. In 1979 they sold the business and retired. In 2000, Blake became concerned that Friendly's CEO, who owned approximately 10% of Friendly and also owned a larger percentage of another restaurant company, was shifting expenses between the businesses in a way detrimental to Friendly shareholders, but personally advantageous to the CEO. Further, Blake believed that Friendly's board of directors was not meeting their fiduciary obligations to shareholders by properly overseeing the activities of the CEO, and that the directors had conflicts of interest, because they were involved with the CEO's non-Friendly business activities. In 2003, Blake filed a lawsuit against the CEO and the company. In 2006, Sardar Biglari, a hedge fund manager who had invested in Friendly, entered into negotiations with Friendly for him to join the board of directors to help improve the management of the business. When these negotiations failed, Biglari launched a proxy fight against Friendly in 2007. While these two activist investors shared similar objectives, they worked independently and chose different strategies.

  • The Conceptual Framework Underlying the Preparation of the Statement of Cash Flow

The objective of the statement of cash flow is to facilitate an understanding of the financial consequences of business activities by providing detail pertaining to the sources and uses of a company's cash. While the income statement and balance sheet are based on accrual accounting, the statement of cash flow is intended to represent the cash-flow consequences of business activities. Most of the challenge with preparing, and ultimately understanding, the statement of cash flow is due to a failure to appreciate the relation between the statement of cash flow and other financial statements. The purpose of this note is to discuss the conceptual framework underlying the preparation of the statement of cash flow that is based on that relation.

  • Customer-Operator Letter Writing Exercise

The exercise involves having students write letters to an organization of their choice describing their operating experience at a detailed level. The companies' responses are paired with the students' letters and the entire collection is made available to the class. The collection can be compelling. Students are quick to sense which organizations value customer communications as meaningful operational input. They find highly instructive the frequency with which situations laboriously recounted by their "valued customers" elicit generic responses from companies, and replies to detailed letters of praise get the tone dramatically wrong. At HBS, it is incorporated in a second year elective, taught in a module devoted to utilizing customer-operators to improve operations (HBS 608-135).
