Ameco Beijing: Benefits of Performance Appraisals
On January 5, 2015, the chief executive officer of the Beijing Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering Corporation (Ameco) was busy reviewing the company’s annual report. Overall, the company’s performance in 2014 had been good: eight foreign airlines had become new customers of the company, which meant that more than 70 international customers had signed contracts for airline maintenance-related business. The growth trend in labour costs had been contained to a certain extent, thanks in part to the implementation of the Direct Control of Personnel Cost monthly performance evaluation program. Over the previous four years, the implementation of this program had generated many positive influences on Ameco. However, new challenges created by changes in the external environment resulted in sharp conflict among departments, raising questions such as how could Ameco set up indicators to motivate the employees and keep talented personnel in the company; minimize the impact of external factors; and avoid the phenomenon of “unmerited” workers being rewarded. How could Ameco use performance appraisals to increase the overall performance of the company? -

Kingston Family Vineyards (A)
In 1998, Courtney Kingston persuaded her family to expand their ranch in Chile from dairy and cattle into wine. By March 2016, Kingston Family Vineyards had a strong international brand for its small-production wines and successfully sold the remaining top-tier grapes to other Chilean winemakers. But they faced key choices regarding focus and growth. As Courtney packed her bags for Chile to attend the annual meeting of the family business, she considered three diverging paths. One option was to increase production of their highly rated, handcrafted wines, which had established the vineyard's reputation for quality, pursuing sufficient scale to turn a profit on the winery. Alternatively, the Kingstons could refocus on the vineyard, as they had originally planned, playing to their strengths in farming expertise and leveraging their primary asset - the land. A third possibility was to Invest in Chile's burgeoning tourism market, and open a boutique hotel in Casablanca's wine country. Courtney wondered how best to preserve the family's land for the next generation while contributing to the greater Casablanca Valley community. This case explores these three strategic possibilities and their potential economic impact. Kingston Family Vineyards - Trade and Education video provides an overview of their history and approach to winemaking in Casablanca Valley, Chile. https://vimeo.com/201833299 (TRT: 04:38) -

BandPage (A)
BandPage CEO James "J" Sider is about to receive results from BandPage's targeted advertising campaign on music streaming service Rhapsody and learn whether BandPage's strategy to improve ad click through rates and generate revenue has succeeded. BandPage, which began as a Facebook app to help musicians build professional-looking pages and convert fan "likes" into revenue, has become a major hub in the online music network. BandPage has deals with upstream and downstream music partners, from streaming services to ticket sellers to merchandise companies, and has built relationships with artists by providing a one stop shop to update current band information across most major music sites simultaneously. BandPage's most recent project has been to differentiate fans by their behavior on streaming sites in order to target super fans with high priced, exclusive and/or personalized offers from artists. At a time when tensions are high between streaming services and artists who believe that they are not being fairly compensated for the use of their music, Sider is convinced that BandPage can help streaming services drive revenue growth for artists through ticket, merchandise and exclusive offer sales. If the Rhapsody data proves that BandPage's strategy is working, the potential revenue growth for BandPage and all of its partners is massive. -
Competing on Customer Service: An Interview with British Airways' Sir Colin Marshall
Just because the competition is tough, that's no reason to be tough on customers, says Sir Colin Marshall, chairman of British Airways. Even in a cutthroat, mass-market business such as air travel, he argues, many people will pay a premium for good service--even those who travel economy. Marshall's views may be unconventional, but so is his company's performance: While the world airline industry has racked up billions of dollars in losses, British Airways has remained solidly profitable.
