• The Dual-Purpose Playbook

Corporations are being pushed to dial down their single-minded pursuit of financial gain and pay closer attention to their impact on employees, customers, communities, and the environment. But changing an organization's DNA may require upending the existing business model and lowering profitability, at least in the short term. The authors' research suggests that successful dual-purpose companies build a commitment to creating both economic and social value into their core activities. This approach, which they call hybrid organizing, includes setting and monitoring social goals alongside financial ones; structuring the organization to support both; hiring and mobilizing employees to embrace them; and practicing dual-minded leadership.

  • Facing Your Mid-Career Crisis

Research shows that many people--even those with seemingly enviable careers--grow dissatisfied in their jobs in their mid-40s. They may regret past choices or feel stuck in a rut. But Kieran Setiya thinks the tools of his trade--philosophy--can help. He says sadness about the road not taken can be mitigated by attending to the people and pursuits that we cherish and wouldn't have without our careers. He notes that we spend much of our work time solving problems and meeting needs, so we should engage in some feel-good activities (inside or outside the office). And he suggests focusing less on projects and more on process, to replace a "What's next?" mindset with an appreciation for the present.

  • Sell Direct-to-Consumer or Through Amazon? (HBR Case Study and Commentary)

For a company that's trying to reach more customers, selling on Amazon might seem to be a no-brainer. But there are plenty of risks: A firm might get dragged into a price war with low-cost competitors, and Amazon, not the firm, will own the data on customers--and could use it to create its own competing products. In this fictional case study, the head of marketing at a young e-bike maker thinks through the pros and cons of selling on Amazon and of sticking with a direct-to-consumer strategy, and considers the long-term implications of each for his brand.

  • Ed Rapp's Affirmations

In this 2019 case, Ed Rapp, retired group president and CFO of Caterpillar, recounts the positive impact that using a type of "self-talk" called an affirmation has had on his life and career. Affirmations are simple, positive, carefully crafted statements declaring specific goals in their completed state. A foundational belief behind an affirmation is that self-image is shaped by self-talk and daily performance reality. Affirmations should be personal, positive, accurate and balanced, allowing a person to assess who they are now and who they want to be in the future. The gaps that emerge between "now" and "the future" lead to making goals for change, supporting the goals with affirmations, and then creating the positive change. Affirmations are powerful because they create self-awareness, which is critical for leaders. Rapp credits affirmations with helping him succeed in his career; balance his personal and professional life; and become more of the person he wanted to be. In 2015, Rapp was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's disease. He was diagnosed on November 5th and rewrote his affirmations on November 7th to reflect his new reality, while maintaining the goal of affirmations: continually making positive change.

In particular, it focuses on how some parts of GEM adopted 'holacracy' - a self-organising system in which individual teams take full responsibility for defining their own work and how it fits with others. The case also provides a lot of detail on the broader cultural change and the high levels of investment in professional training around new techniques and concepts.

  • The Massport Model: Integrating Diversity and Inclusion into Public-Private Partnerships

"It's a celebration of the diversity and inclusion this project represents from its design, to its contracting, to its nonprofit partners," he said, referring to the process that Massport, the land's owner, had undertaken to select a developer for the hotel. Massport required that bidders incorporate diversity and inclusion (D&I) plans into their bids and announced that the plans would be considered alongside more traditional evaluation criteria such as building design, construction experience, and financial capabilities. On May 22, 2018, executives from the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) along with Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh gathered in the Seaport District of South Boston for a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction on a new hotel in Boston's Seaport District. The hotel, when completed in early 2021, would be the fourth largest in the state. "Today marks more than just a groundbreaking," said Mayor Walsh. The move was so unusual that some in the Boston development community doubted Massport was serious about giving so much weight-25%-to bidders' D&I plans. Nevertheless, at the groundbreaking of the $550 million hotel, Massport CEO Thomas Glynn told a Boston Business Journal reporter that Massport intended to use the new selection model for future projects.

  • Creating Shared Value at the Mills: A Billion Dollar Experiment in Corporate Social Entrepreneurship

When the Hong Kong billion-dollar revitalization of a set of derelict cotton mills in Hong Kong was first conceptualized by property heiress Vanessa Cheung, the project had a clear direction around which it was to be oriented. The Mills was to be a social institution: a space in which an otherwise poor and fragmented local community could connect with both its past, as a center of textile production, and its future. Financed by Nan Fung Group, Vanessa's multigenerational family business and one of Asia's most valuable property development companies, the Mills was underwritten without the diligence that might proceed projects of a comparable scale. Three years from project inception but still several months away from the facilities opening to the public in late 2018, the Mills struggled to operationalize the three business models it had evolved to encompass, namely, an incubation platform including co-working space; shopping space targeting pop-up stores and smaller retailers; a heritage center to operate as a non-profit museum. Vanessa also wondered how her project will deliver on its original vision of creating shared value for its stakeholders.

Memaksa Steel, an Indonesian steel products manufacturer, has recently developed a new finishing process that reduces the wear time on steel by 60% for products that are subjected to intense abrasion during use. The marketing department believes this innovation should be applied to steel saw blades for use in Indonesia's lumber mills. Saw blades manufactured using this new finishing process would sell for 35% more than the older blades, but would drastically increase the cutting time before needing replacement. Santi der Majoido, the CEO, must examine the channel structure and decide whether or not to launch the new product.

  • DBS India: Banking on the Unbanked

The case is set in 2015, when DBS Bank applied to the Reserve Bank of India to operate as a locally incorporated subsidiary under the wholly-owned subsidiary (WOS) scheme. DBS had a presence in India since 1995 and had grown to become the fifth largest foreign bank by assets. Upbeat about the growth prospects, it was the first foreign bank to apply for the conversion from branch operation to WOS. The scheme would extend near-equal treatment to locally-incorporated foreign banks as with national banks, and it aimed to incentivise them to scale up their operations in return for opening new branches in under-banked and unbanked cities and issuing credit to companies categorised under the priority lending sectors. However, the past year had been challenging for DBS India. Its profitability had taken a hit as bad loans rose more than four-fold, climbing to the top of the list among all private banks in India. The bad debts were primarily due to delayed servicing of loans by construction companies, which were granted credit during a previous period of aggressive lending. The case discusses the opportunities and challenges the WOS brings to DBS India, leading to its final decision to apply for the scheme.

  • India: State Capacity and Unity in Diversity

As 2018 drew to a close, India prepared to once again carry out the largest democratic exercise in human history, as in less than six months more than 850 million eligible voters would have the chance to choose their representatives to the Lok Sabha-the country's lower house of parliament-and, thus, their country's Prime Minister and cabinet.[i] The election would pit the ruling party-the Bharatiya Janata Party (Indian People's Party, known as the BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-against a collection of parties that included the once-dominant Indian National Congress party (Congress). The 2019 elections would serve as a referendum on Modi's first term in office and, therefore, on a high stakes question: had India's implausibly robust democracy produced the right leader for the right moment, or had it taken the wrong path?

  • Australia's Power Deregulation Experience

This note examines the economic and political impact of the Australian government's deregulation and climate change policies, as well as a slew of additional corresponding market factors, on Australia's energy and electricity markets. Since the Australian government began its concerted effort to deregulate the power generation industry in the 1990s, prices for electricity and natural gas have risen significantly faster than either automotive fuel or the broader Australian consumer price index. As a result, Australia's energy and electricity markets and the government's intervention (or lack thereof) in these markets have become an extremely important and divisive political issue for the country.
