Codman Academy: Beyond the Start-Up Phase
As it entered its seventh academic year, Codman Academy, an expeditionary learning charter school located in Dorchester, Massachusetts, was reflecting on its successes and challenges. The school had succeeded in placing every member of its most recent graduating class in college. However, recent changes to the state's accountability system necessitated greater focus on helping Codman Academy students meet this graduation requirement. Codman Academy's founding, academic model, leadership, and partnerships (including its unique relationship and location within a community-based health center) are also discussed. -
Managing Schools for High Performance: The Area Instruction Officer at Chicago Public Schools
Set in 2007, examines the role of the Area Instruction Officer (AIO) in Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Focuses on the leadership skills and behavior needed to successfully manage a portfolio of schools with varying capacities, needs, and challenges. Also describes the role of the district and what its current development and support systems include for AIOs. Several schools and principals are profiled in order to delve deeply into "a day in the life" of an AIO. -
Using Data to Improve Instruction at the Mason School
Describes the use of data by teachers in a Boston public elementary school and the ways in which the district provided support and development as it implemented its strategy to improve student performance. Discusses the challenges of alignment among district departments and focuses on the school culture needed to engage all teachers in using data for instructional improvement.
